Enter your account balance, the percentage you are willing to lose, and where your stop goes. It returns the position size that risks exactly that much — converted at today’s rates, because on anything other than EURUSD a pip is not worth $10.
Two of those three inputs are yours. The third — pip value — is the one that breaks, because it differs for every pair and moves with the market.
A $10,000 account, risking 1%, with a 20-pip stop on EURUSD:
Same account, same 1%, same 20-pip stop — but on GBPJPY, where a pip is worth $6.33 right now rather than $10.00. Reuse the EURUSD size there and you are risking roughly +58% more than you intended, on every trade, until a losing streak makes it obvious.
Assuming $10 a pip. True on EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD and NZDUSD — any pair quoted in dollars. On USDJPY a pip is 1,000 yen, worth whatever that is today. On GBPCHF it depends on the franc. On gold it depends on which pip convention your broker uses.
Ignoring the minimum lot. Brokers trade in 0.01 steps and will not go below one micro lot. On a small account the smallest position you can place may already risk more than you intended. This calculator says so when it happens rather than rounding quietly and letting you discover it later.
Sizing on the stop you wish you had. The stop that belongs in that box is the one you will actually leave in the platform, not the tighter one you are hoping to get away with.
